accidents happen…

Sunday, September 30th, 2007

Today one of my sons and I had an out of body experience if you will. Praise be to God we were okay. We were in a minor car accident. Now mind you I’ve had a streak of no accidents for 19 years. The last accident I was involved in was when I worked as a messenger. I was driving in Beverly Hills and rear ended a corvette. luckily I drove a little Datsen B210 that couldn’t dent a fly and things were okay. Today, happened to be the day that I’d be involved in one. We were just shaken up a little. The car is a little damaged but we were able to drive it home. Now we wait for the “adjuster.” The out of body experience was the momentary shock and than the realization that you were just involved in an accident. When I awoke from the daze dad kicked it into gear and assured the kiddoe that we were okay. The other dude was cool. No injuries. His car unfortunately had to be towed. Would enjoy the prayers of quick resolution and that my insurance rates will some how not hit the ceiling. Thank you Jesus for keeping everyone involved safe from harm and thank you for SEAT BELTS!!!!!

believe it and live by it…

Wednesday, September 26th, 2007

How is it possible that the gospel should be credible, that people should come to believe that the power which has the last word in human affairs is represented by a man hanging on a cross? I am suggesting that the only answer, the only hermeneutic of the gospel, is a congregation of men and women who believe it and live by it. First of many readings…

Working on some of my first reading assignments. Read this today from Eugene Peterson:

In taking “monestary” as a metaphor for “parish,” I found way to detach myself from the careerism mind-set that has been so ruinous to pastoral vocations and began to understand my congregation as a location for a spirituality maturing life and ministry.

The congregation is the pastor’s place for developing vocational holiness. It goes without saying that it is the place of ministry: we preach the word and administer the sacraments, we give pastoral care and administer the community life, we teach and we give spiritual direction. But it is also the place in which develop virtue, learn love, advance in hope-become what we preach. At the same time we proclaim a holy gospel, we develop a holy life. We dare not separate what we do from who we are.

A place for me to grow in Christ? BAM!

Good news for the 7.5 of you that occasionally visit my wannabe blog. I was recently accepted here to begin a Doctor of Ministry. I feel all goofy inside and overwhelmed with thankfulness to God for the opportunity to begin. It all happens starting Monday!!!!

One of the many things I find myself doing on a Sunday morning is watching for visitors. In a small church it’s really easy to notice when someone is new. I’ve noticed that the hardest part sometimes is getting from the front to the back quick enough to say hello right after the sermon.

towers.jpg

We were expecting our third child during the month of 9/11. It was September 4th when T-bone came into the world via the grace of God. A few days later our middle child turned 5. I was also in the middler year of my seminary education. I was in route on the day of 9/11 dropping the two kiddoes at the time off at school in Princeton. I walked into the school office and a couple of the office staff were in tears. I asked what was happening and one of the workers mentioned a plane had crashed into one of the towers at the world trade center. I rushed home to watch the news and within minutes of turning on the news, the second plane crashed into the other tower. The kids would come home talking about it every day. Six years later I still remember everything I did that day on nine eleven. We enjoyed the gift of our son and celebrated the birthday of our 5 year old that week. We most of all enjoyed the blessing of the lives we’d been given and feeling grateful to the Lord for his grace, but at the same time still grieving that the world would never be the same.
